Someday, I'm Going to Go Into Labor

I just thought I'd remind my readers that if I become silent for a little bit, and then you see this:
it's because I had a baby. I imagine I'll put up some pictures of my new precious little one. I have some posts on the back burner, mostly recipes, ready to go for this occasion, so unless I hit a batch of blogger's block before then, I should still be able to provide some new reading material.

I've been having a lot of contractions. My midwife says that being overactive, dehydrated, or calcium deficient can cause a lot of "practice" contractions. I've been real careful, although with my nesting, I'm not going to stop with my activity level. A few contractions have taken me off guard, but most are just pressure.

Tonight is the full moon. I asked my midwife about the connection between going into labor and the full moon. My cycles have always been in line with the moon's, in case you were wondering, so I was curious on her take. She said she never saw a real connection between full moons and women going into labor. She has student midwives who work as doulas on the side. One of the slightly more organized student midwives piped in that on the last full moon, she had attended three births as a doula and the midwife had attended one. So, we'll see.

FWIW, we raise horses and it is the opposite with them. Full moons give predators have a slight advantage. We never have foals born during the full moon. Since humans are "predators" perhaps it is the other way around and full moons mean more births?

I had my first on a full moon and thought for sure I had some kind of lunar connection going on in my uterus. I was sorely disappointed when the full moon came around with my second and nothing happened for another three weeks.

I hope you have your baby soon. Those last weeks are miserable!

Oh and the only old wive's tale induction strategy that has ever worked for me is sex. But I'm a firm believer that it will only work when your body is ready.

Good luck!!

I am excited for you and your upcoming birth. What a blessing children are. I'm not sure I could raise more than 2 or three myself, but I envy those that can.

My husband and I went to a wedding yesterday for one of his cousin's and they come from a large family. One of my husband's cousin who was in attendance was there with her 10 children and they were all so nicely dressed and well behaved. When asked if she planned to have more, the response is, "If God decides to bless us with more, we would welcome them." She is amazing. Her husband is a barber and she is a homemaker and they make do on less. I don't know their exact income range, but I know all of their children were home schooled and several are now going to college. So, I have seen first hand that a large family can live on a small income and be very happy.

I hope your upcoming birth goes smoothly and your baby is happy and healthy. I can't wait to see your blog title change and see the pictures of your sweet little one! Good luck and God Bless you!

Good luck with labor! At my midwife's office, I once saw the calendar at the front desk and noticed that days with a full moon were highlighted. I asked why, and was told there is a definite correlation between the full moon and women going into labor.

I'm excited for you. Do you know if your baby is a boy or girl? Wishing you a safe birth and a time of joy with your family.

2 of my 3 were full moon babies. One of them was late and a farmer told me not to worry, that his cows always gave birth on a full moon and it was coming soon...he was right (though I didn't like being compared to a cow, LOL).

Best wishes to you and the baby!

I work in L&D and there is a definite connection to the full moon and storms as well. Something about the change in pressure. I've noticed you haven't answered any of these comments so perhaps you are already in the throws of labor! Good luck and congrats on your new blessing!

The hospital I went to have my sons said their was something about the full moon and I think that births do come in waves. My son was born on a rare year that I actually had to be sent to the regular hospital from the birth center because they ran out of room.

They said it was a weird thing that happens every few years. It was a week after the fullmoon. Of course my first son had to be taken with a c-section because he refused to vacate. LOL

I delivered 11 yrs ago during a full moon and had to stay in the ldr room overnight and most of the next day because the postnatal floor rooms were full. I think 2 other ldr rooms had to do the same thing. The nurse said this happened every full moon at that particular hospital! Too funny!

A full moon didn't work for me. We also tried "everyone's" advice, just for the heck of it, of driving down some really bumpy, rutted dirt roads. Of course that didn't work either! My baby came five days past his due date.

Emily, you are in my prayers. I pray that you and your baby have a safe and easy time.

I think MOST health care professionals would say there's a correlation between a full moon & more people needing to go to the hospital for one reason or another. My mom has been a nurse for almost 40 years & she definitely believes there's a correlation. Bless you & your baby.
