On Monday, I noticed Daniel was a little tired, and he ended up sleeping most of the day.
On Tuesday, he again slept. He had no fever, and got up to go to the bathroom.
On Wednesday, he wasn't waking up much. I gave him pedialite by spoon throughout the day and was worried he wasn't getting enough. In the evening, his breathing became troubling. I took him to the emergency room. They immediately transferred him to the Intensive Care Unit in a larger hospital. He was in a coma.
There were two major leads on what happened to him. The first was that he swallowed something like anti-freeze. The testing came back negative and was sent to the Mayo clinic to be confirmed. The second was that he was born with a metabolic disorder. The testing for this also came back negative. They did every other test imaginable to him, but with no luck. They don't know what happened to him. The official diagnosis is dehydration. They just can't take the next step back to find what caused the dehydration.
He woke from his coma on Friday. He isn't saying as much as we'd like, but more than he was. He is eating and drinking, but still has some issues to be worked through before we can go home. Today he was transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit and into Pediatrics.
He's definitely going to pull through. We don't know how long it will take. I thank you for your prayers.

Oh my goodness Emily. How terrifying. My thoughts and prayers are with Daniel and your family.
My prayers continue for your little guy. Are they still trying to figure out the source of the dehydration or are they at a loss? I'm very glad you updated. Is there anything that people can do to help?

Emily I am so glad he is going to be ok. I am praying for Daniel, you and your family! It is really scary for your child to be that sick. Take care and get some rest.
Keeping you and your family in my prayers. There is nothing scarier than when one of our children is sick. As a mom, your instincts just cry out to fix them, and all we can do is wait patiently and pray. I trust that God will heal your Daniel and restore him and you guys will come through this.

Wow. As a mom who had a child who didn't wake up when she should and had to call the paramedics (after talking extensively with the pediatrician and trying everything else that should work), I know you had to be worried and scared. And having two other young children to take care of had to just be unimaginable. My daughter woke when the paramedics took her blood pressure. It was nearly 4 years ago and it still freaks me out.
I am still praying for you and your family and pray that God continues to give you strength, comfort, release you from any fear, and that He, as The Great Physician, heals your son completely and gives His wisdom readily to the doctors.

Yikes, scary! I am not a praying sort of person, but I will most certainly keep you and your family in my thoughts!! Peace.

best wishes to your son, emily

Wow sounds pretty scary! Hope the doctors are able to figure out what went wrong. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers
Thanks for taking the time to update us Emily. I have been checking quite often to see if anything was here, I was worried. I thank the Lord that Daniel has awoken from his coma and pray He may speed his complete healing.

Your precious Daniel is in our prayers. Thankfully things are looking up for him at this point. We will pray that the Doctors are given wisdom and can figure out what caused his illness!
I am so very sorry. I can't imagine how terrifying that was for you and your family! Thank you for the post and please keep us updated on Daniel's progress.
I am so sorry this is happening to your family. It is the worst feeling to have one of your kids sick - there's no panic or fear that compares.
All the best as your son gets better.
So sorry! We will be praying for him and you!
Oh, Emily, how very scary! I'm glad to hear that he'll pull through, but I'm so sorry to hear that the little guy is going through this. I'm sure this is taking an emotional toll on you, so be sure you're taking care of yourself.
I'm so, so sorry to hear about your little one, Emily. I'm a lurker that enjoys your posts and loves to hear about your lovely baby boys. I am in tears for Daniel and for your family--all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers constantly. God is with you, your husband, poor little Daniel--and with Bobby and Tommy as well--during this difficult time. Try to keep yourself well and eat and drink properly--I know you don't feel like it, but you must stay well for your Daniel. I will take the healing oil for your little boy at our healing service Wednesday-I do so wish I lived closer so I could offer my physical help. God bless you and give you the strength and fortitude to face this challenge. Again, God bless you and keep you at this time and always.
Patricia
Dehydration can happen so fast! If my mother hadn't helped me recognize the symptoms of dehydration, our Joanna (when she was 4) may have been in the same situation. I'm sure he'll be fine. Thanks for updating us. Once they are rehydrated, they usually come back quickly. Hope things are looking better soon.
oH my , All 8 of us are praying for him and the whole family, God Bless you all. Michelle
Wow! That's scary! I'm so glad that he's going to pull thru and is making positive improvements! Will keep him and your family in my prayers!
Oh my goodness Emily! I'm so glad he's ok! Give him a kiss for me. You must've been terrified! We're also going through a very serious crisis right now. Times are so trying. Your family is in my prayers. Erin
Prayers for Daniel, you and Dan. Also for God to grant immense wisdom to all of Daniel providers that they listen with their ears and also their eyes and souls.
I'm glad he is OK Emily, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I'll keep thinking of you and your little one.
Oh Emily, how scary for you and your family. My best thoughts are with you. I have had a couple of scary incidents with my youngest and I can imagine how you feel. Good Luck and keep strong.
Emily, I hope you have the support of some family up there near the Mayo clinic, but I know Daniel is in excellent hands.
It's so hard not knowing e,xactly what's going on during a medical emergency and waiting out a coma is obviously a highly stressful experience. Take care of yourself and the rest of your family.
I'm so glad thad Daniel is going to be ok. You are in my thoughts.
Praying for you and your family during this tough time. May the lord hold you and keep you.
How awful. There is very little worse as a mother than my child being so seriously ill, and not knowing why. Hope you guys get some answer and that the little one recovers quickly.
Oh Emily! Praying for your little guy and your family! How scary... my son was dehydrated when he was 2, sounded a lot like this but after IV fluids and a few days rest, he was fine. I hope for your son that he is back to himself in no time!
Oh my word, praying for a speedy recover for little Dan and peace for you. Kaje x
I hope he will be ok!
Oh no I am so sorry you and your little man are going through this. We are praying for his recovery and strength for your family.
How scary! I will pray for continued healing as well as peace for you and your family.
How frightening! Good luck with getting down to the source of this so it doesn't happen again. I hope he's home soon.
Emily, thanks for the update on what is going on. I will continue to pray for Daniel, and for you and Dan. It is good that they are not finding a problem, other than possible dehydration. I think that sometimes we just need rest, maybe his body recognized that and that's what happened. Glad to hear he is improving. Take care of yourself as well.
Emily,
I am so sorry to hear that Daniel has been sick. It is very troubling as a Mom to have a sick kiddo. I hope he is improving quickly and will be able to come home soon. Keep your head up and don't forget to take care of yourself.
That is probably a parent's worst night mare. I hope that he is able to recover 100% and that your family is strong through these tough times. God Bless - Elyse @ TheSimpleFamilyLife
I'm so sorry about your son. That has to be terrifying.
I wish him a fast recovery

Oh this is terrible. I can only imagine how you must feel. Many prayers offered up for your sweet little Daniel and for you all as he recovers and what happened is investigated so you can have peace of mind.
I can't imagine how scary it must be to have one of your babies in the hospital. My thoughts are with your family and we hope the doctors can identify the problem and make that precious baby better! God bless!

Jenny
!!! Wishing Daniel lots of healing energy and hope he can come home soon. Hope you get some answers to figure out what the heck happened.
It's scary having babies in the hospital..I've been there twice when my boys needed surgery as newborns. Take care of him, and yourself so that you can have the energy you need to care for him as he heals.
Do you have some family support and help with the kids?
Thank God you had health insurance.
I hope Daniel recovers soon.
Oh no...hope he pulls through okay!
Did he go into a coma before or after the hospital? How scary!!
Oh my. How scary. Best wishes to you and your family.
How scary. Praise God he is recovering. We will pray for continued healing as well as insight to what happened.
I'm sure you've heard it hundreds of times already but I'll say it again: I'll be praying for Daniel and the rest of you. Wish we were close enough to offer childcare.
Praying for Daniel and you all as you deal with this. Thank goodness you kept that insurance...you just never know when something will happen and when it does, it means one less thing to stress about.
Praying for you and your family.
I am so sorry to hear about Daniel. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
Oh Emily, that's terrible! I bet you were so worried about your little guy! I've been thinking about you and am glad to hear that the worst is over.

Your family will be in my prayers.

Glad to hear your son is doing better. I know only too well the hell of having a child in the hospital for long periods of time. Our baby had her first heart surgery at 15 days old and will return for her next open heart surgery in about three weeks.
A bit of advice? Take care of yourself first. I know a mother's instinct is to go all out for her child but you have to rest and eat and stay hydrated or else you won't be able to function. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Best of luck to your family! I hope your son is able to come home soon!
Oh my, I'm so sorry. I'm sure this is so hard for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I am so glad he's going to be okay. That must have been a very frightening time for you and Dan. Thanks for the update.
hang in there, mama!
I am so sorry for what you and your family are going through. I wish for a speedy recovery and a healthy day forward for your son.
My good thoughts are with you during this troubling time, and with your family.
Oh my! I am so sorry you are going through this. I can't imagine how terrified you must be through this all.(((HUGS))) I am praying that Daniel pulls through this and that it's something simple and easy and has no lasting damage. (((HUGS)))
You and your family are in my prayers. May Daniel have a quick and full recovery.
wow, how incredibly scary. I'm so thankful to hear he's recovering. Keeping your entire family in my prayers.
Oh my goodness I'm so sorry! I'll definitely have you in my prayers. I hope that he recovers and begins to function properly.
I'm overwhelmed for you.
Hang in there!
-Sandy
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish for Daniel to have speedy recovery.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. It is scary having a little one in the hospital. DS was in isolation for a few days with respiratory problems from H1N1 last month and it was hard on our family. It is easy for little ones to get dehydrated. Hopefully they can find the cause for Daniel and all will be well with your family soon!
just reading this, i'm praying for healing and for a quick return home
You guys are in my prayers. I am glad Daniel is feeling a little better now.
How scary! I hope he feels better soon and that the doctors can find out what caused his problem in the first place.
Good luck to your little family. Times like this are very hard. Having been thru something similar, as patient/older sister/mother/great-aunt, I know somethimes only faith is your lifeline.
Bless little Daniel, may God carry him to health.
We're praying for you guys!!!
WOW what an experience. I am so glad to hear that your baby is doing better. I will continue to pray for a fast and complete recovery.
I hope Daniel has a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with your family.
Still sending all the good healing thoughts your way Emily, for you and your family.
Praying for Daniel's full recovery and that he gets to come home soon.
Praying for you and Dan and a speedy recovery for your little man. Lean on the Lord, take things minute by minute and He will get you through.
Praying for you and your family!! God's speed for recovery...
Poor little guy. I hope they get him feeling better soon.
Prayers and positive thoughts!
Sending you all good thoughts and a quick, healthy recovery for your baby!!
sending prayers your way.
Continuing to pray for little Dan, you, and your family, Emily...I hope you are doing well!
Best wishes for Daniel and his recovery!
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
Phil 4:4-6
Hoping to hear good news soon...... so sorry for you all.
Prayer being sent up for you and your family.
Oh goodness, you and Daniel and your whole family are in our prayers.
so sorry to hear this. you must have been so scared. i'm glad that daniel is doing better and wish him a complete and quick recovery. i also hope that they can get to the bottom of what happened. dehydration happens and can make a child very sick, very quickly. but i'd really push to make sure that it was indeed dehydration. lots of love to you, daniel and family.
I'm not really sure if prayers help... but it won't hurt either. I know how hard it is when you loose a child; it shouldn't happen to anyone. I hope Dan recovers quick and completely.
How scary! I'm praying for y'all.
I'm so sorry, Emily, but so glad that Daniel is going to be okay. I will keep praying for all of you!
Oh Emily, I have been there/done that several times and I know how hard it is. I hope Daniel is doing better, and that you are doing okay as well. Hugs and prayers for you and your family.
God be with Daniel and your family.
Emily,
I hope Daniel continues to heal. I will keep you and your family in my prayers...
I hope Daniel's doing better today. sending prayers out for you guys.
Oh Emily, my blood ran cold reading your update! I was so happy to read, at the end, that Daniel is pulling through. Prayers, grace and peace to you all.
Hi, Emily! I 've been praying for your son. I keep thinking I should ask you to ask your Dr. to test your son for kidney bean poisoning. I know you said you read the article I showed you, but I went to the sites again & read this : it is not destroyed by cooking in a crockpot. It says the heat isn't high enough. I don't write this to upset you. Just thought it may bea lead to your son's illness & this site is very clear that the poisoning can cause death, so knew you would want to know.God Bless, Lisa~~

Emily, dehydration does not cause coma unless something else is going on (encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, etc). A head injury is the main cause of coma, or a stroke or seizure.
For the sake of Daniel, I hope the doctors will get to the bottom of his health issue. A healthy child does not just go into a coma. I don't want to worry you either, but there has got to be more going on, and you want to make sure that this doesn't happen again, or that there won't be more permanent brain damage.
Good luck.
Thank you for the update so we can focus our positive thoughts for you. Hang in there.
I highly doubt the cause of the coma was pneumonia. More plausibly if there was pneumonia detected it would have been from him lying in bed for three days with shallow respirations. I would search for a second opinion if I was told my child lapsed into a coma because of pneumonia and dehydration.
Lilly
Oh Emily. I've lurked your blog for a while now. I'm sorry. I really hope Daniel is okay. As frustrated as you make me, god I'm sorry Emily.
I am late in posting this but hope all is well with your little boy!!!! Let us know what the tests show when you can!
Emily,
I have not read your blog in awhile, I am so sorry your little man is going through this.
I could not even begin to imagine what you are going through right now, I have two boys 8 and 4, and just the very thought of one in a coma sends chills.
((HUGS)) and prayers are sent your way......
Mom in Canada
I keep checking back for an update. I hope it hasn't gotten more serious.
God bless you, you and your family are in my prayers.
Josie's friend, thank you for posting that as I was about to do so myself. I am praying they find the reason for his coma and praying he'll be treated and do well in the future. Causes of coma in young children are frightening and I am so worried for him.
My best wishes and prayers to you and your family.
Hopefully a cause will be found and things will turn out well.
Jean
