Update

On Monday, I noticed Daniel was a little tired, and he ended up sleeping most of the day.

On Tuesday, he again slept. He had no fever, and got up to go to the bathroom.

On Wednesday, he wasn't waking up much. I gave him pedialite by spoon throughout the day and was worried he wasn't getting enough. In the evening, his breathing became troubling. I took him to the emergency room. They immediately transferred him to the Intensive Care Unit in a larger hospital. He was in a coma.

There were two major leads on what happened to him. The first was that he swallowed something like anti-freeze. The testing came back negative and was sent to the Mayo clinic to be confirmed. The second was that he was born with a metabolic disorder. The testing for this also came back negative. They did every other test imaginable to him, but with no luck. They don't know what happened to him. The official diagnosis is dehydration. They just can't take the next step back to find what caused the dehydration.

He woke from his coma on Friday. He isn't saying as much as we'd like, but more than he was. He is eating and drinking, but still has some issues to be worked through before we can go home. Today he was transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit and into Pediatrics.

He's definitely going to pull through. We don't know how long it will take. I thank you for your prayers.

Wow. As a mom who had a child who didn't wake up when she should and had to call the paramedics (after talking extensively with the pediatrician and trying everything else that should work), I know you had to be worried and scared. And having two other young children to take care of had to just be unimaginable. My daughter woke when the paramedics took her blood pressure. It was nearly 4 years ago and it still freaks me out.

I am still praying for you and your family and pray that God continues to give you strength, comfort, release you from any fear, and that He, as The Great Physician, heals your son completely and gives His wisdom readily to the doctors.

Glad to hear your son is doing better. I know only too well the hell of having a child in the hospital for long periods of time. Our baby had her first heart surgery at 15 days old and will return for her next open heart surgery in about three weeks.

A bit of advice? Take care of yourself first. I know a mother's instinct is to go all out for her child but you have to rest and eat and stay hydrated or else you won't be able to function. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Best of luck to your family! I hope your son is able to come home soon!

Hi, Emily! I 've been praying for your son. I keep thinking I should ask you to ask your Dr. to test your son for kidney bean poisoning. I know you said you read the article I showed you, but I went to the sites again & read this : it is not destroyed by cooking in a crockpot. It says the heat isn't high enough. I don't write this to upset you. Just thought it may bea lead to your son's illness & this site is very clear that the poisoning can cause death, so knew you would want to know.God Bless, Lisa~~

Emily, dehydration does not cause coma unless something else is going on (encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, etc). A head injury is the main cause of coma, or a stroke or seizure.

For the sake of Daniel, I hope the doctors will get to the bottom of his health issue. A healthy child does not just go into a coma. I don't want to worry you either, but there has got to be more going on, and you want to make sure that this doesn't happen again, or that there won't be more permanent brain damage.

Good luck.

Kendra said...

Thank you for the update so we can focus our positive thoughts for you. Hang in there.

Anonymous said...

I highly doubt the cause of the coma was pneumonia. More plausibly if there was pneumonia detected it would have been from him lying in bed for three days with shallow respirations. I would search for a second opinion if I was told my child lapsed into a coma because of pneumonia and dehydration.
