We're Home

As you can imagine, this has been a hard thing for us all to go through. On the second day in the Intensive Care Unit, the doctor told me that they would let me know when they knew what caused my son to get so sick (which they never did), and let me know when they knew for sure he would live through it (which he is).

I'm going to be a taking a week off from regular daily posting, maybe two. My son has a lot of physical therapy to go through. He is in diapers and not walking as much as we would like.

I have lots of thoughts I want to share with you all about it, though, so I won't be silent. You can expect some sporadic posting when I have the time, energy and passion to write.

Again, I thank you all for your prayers.

What were his symptoms? Any possible diagnosis? A lot of people are concerned and offering suggestions. Perhaps if you could share what happened, maybe others who ave been through something similar can help you through this. That's one wonderful efffect of the internet - you aren't alone!!!!

I am so relieved to hear that you and your family are home. I have been checking your blog multiple times a day worrying about Daniel. How frustrating it must be to not know what caused him to get so sick. I will continue to pray for his healing and for your family to have the strength you will need during this difficult time.

I know that you must be overwhelmed right now but in spite of this I would really encourage to contact the hospital immediately and request his medical records.

Doing this now will make it easier because they should still be at the hospital and not in storage yet.

They might throw a bit of a fit (even though it's perfectly legal) but don't let them get away with it and threaten legal action if you have to.

Having them might shed some light for you and they will definitely help in the future.

Well wishes for your entire family.

I am thanking God that little Dan is home and that he has a plan for OT and PT and getting back to normal. I hope that you and Dan Sr can work around schedules and be able to handle all the changes that are coming for his benefit.

As for why this happened, tox tests dont' happen overnight like they show on TV, it takes some time for technologists to get the data that will show what the problem could be.

Got to get off the computer as we've got a severe Tstorm headed our way here by LAX.

My thoughts are with your little guy, hoping for a quick return to his healthy self!

I bought a bunch of ground beef on sale today and thought of you, haha! I found a fantastic deal on grassfed ground beef and bought 12 lb., which is a 6 month supply for my family. :)

You must be so tired! But please remember you are your son's best advocate. Please demand they find the cause of his illness so this does not happen again. I am afraid that I have found in my own life that doctors are only human and will tend to the squeaky wheel first. If you except we don't know for answer you never will.

Glad to know that he is on the mend.

I'm so glad to hear Daniel is home. I hope he continues to recover quickly. It is so frustrating when doctors don't have the answers! My son had to be rushed to the ER last week after passing out in class at school. He has had similar near-blackouts for nearly 2 years, and they kept saying "dehydration". Now we are finally seeing a cardiologist and neurologist. If you are not satisfied with the answers the docs are giving you, please insist on more follow ups. You owe it to your son. Hugs and good healing vibes!

I have lived through not knowing what is wrong with your baby, and I know how hard it is. We are thinking of you often.

I'm glad to see an update. I've been so concerned. It's horrible that they haven't given you any ideas about what caused him to become so sick. Is it possible this was related to something neurological, perhaps a seizure? Your family will continue to be in my prayers. Please update as often as you can. You have an online community rooting for your little guy. Take care!

I'm sorry to hear he's been sick but glad he's back home. I do hope that they can figure out what made him sick.

I do know that dehydration can cause problems with walking, etc., but can't imagine how he got that way as he's so little.

My mom gets dehydrated easily so she drinks a bunch of Gatorade daily to keep herself hydrated and out of the hospital. I can always tell when she's headed in that direction as her lips start to get real dry and her balance is off.

I'll be praying for him!

God is good! And I'm so happy to hear your son is doing better and you are all home at last! Please don't let your Drs. off the hoof - continue to question them regarding the cause of his illness. You don't ever want to have to go through this again.

Much strength and peace, my dear to you and your family. Remember to take care of yourself too, Mama, even if it just means taking a shower or a 5 minute walk.

I truly hope he recovers from whatever it is. Thank all of the staff at that hospital for saving his life.

Good news. I've been thinking about you and how hard it must have been--from watching my mother in law during our own rough times, I was blatantly aware that this kind of situation is very, very hard on mothers. I know you're being strong and I know you have everything you need to get through this well.

I'm sorry you all have to endure this, but I do also know for a fact that hard times don't have to make you weaker, but can actually make you realize that you were much stronger than you ever imagined. Good luck and keep us posted as you can.

Emily,
I’m glad to hear that Daniel was well enough to come home. Please keep us updated on his progress.
As for the doctors not telling you what caused Daniel to be sick, please be patient. Daniel was in the hospital for less than a week and not all test results or result times are created equal. I would just make sure to check in with the doctors ever few days for an update. As Shelly C stated – doctors are only human – I’m sure they are not intentionally trying to keep that information from you. They have many patients to think about, where as you are completely focused on Daniel. Just follow up.
Wishing you all strength,
Sue

So glad to hear you are able to be home again and settle into that comfort during this trying time. Best of luck finding out what happened and ensuring it never happens again. We will all be currious to hear how your family endures this situation financially, socially, mentally, spiritually, etc...but all in time. First comes your family. Best wishes and blessings.

Emily, I really hope you will find the cause of these symptoms. I read this article that reminded me of your son, so this might be something you want to talk about to your doctor:

Better be safe than sorry, good luck to you and your family, may your find strength and hope in these trying times.

Emily,
So happy you all are home now. You are going thru a hard time. We are all thinking of you and praying for little Daniel.
I do agree with Sue, patience on the dianosis, please. Some tests can take months to complete. I was a hospital billing clerk. I had one patient who waited six months for a diagnosis! In the meantime, his insurance would not pay the claim. Just keep in touch with the doctors.
Sending good thoughts,
Sukey Day

Did you perhaps write down the names of the tests that the doctors did? Knowing what they are testing for can at least rule stuff out, even if they didn't explain (or you didn't remember) what they were for/about.

Anytime a family member is in the hospital, we bring notebook and pencil to write down everything that is done, every medicine that is taken, and every idea that the doctor has/rules out/considers.

Since he was just released, I am sure the docs gave you a number to call with any questions. If not, call the hospital. Get a list of tests ordered, test results, diagnostic info, and any other "notes". You should not have to pay for this info.

Just a suggestion, if you are not familiar with a lot of medical stuff.

Paul R, in hindsight, bringing a pen and notepad and writing everything down sounds like great advice. If anything like this happens again, we may do that. Getting the records is on our to do list, but getting my son up to par is the first priority.
